Women's rights

I’ve seen many programmes last days on TV channels celebrating the international women's day , and i’ve heard some voices criticizing Islam and Muslims and accusing them of opressing woman and treating her inhumanly , here i want to clarify some facts , Islam and Muslims are two different things, you cannot blame the law if the people in charge of this law are not fully commited to imply it or if they imply it in the wrong way, for instance in some Muslim countries you find people who deny the woman right of learning and they justify it by religious commitment while learning in Islam is more than right , it’s a duty !!! bad practices in Muslim world were inherited as a tribal traditions and with time passing and the spreading of ignorance as a result of the absence of competent scholars of Islamic law these traditions became a part of the religion, Islam raised the rank of woman and consider her as a partner of man, give her rights and duties according to her abilities ,she has the right to work as long as she respects the Islamic rules , she could be even a businsswoman like the first wife of prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him)was, Islam never consider woman as a source of evil like some other religions did , the dignity of woman is protected , for instance if a man accuses a woman of immorality and then he turns out to be a liar not only he incurrs a severe punishment but also he would be considered as untrustworthy for the rest of his life , as for the situation the woman is living in the West we should recognize that there are some advantages like learning , working but saying that the woman in the West has no problems would be exagerated ,there is an unlimited number of reports showing the difficulties a western working woman is facing going from verbal harassment to rape, a growing rate of suicide , at least one third of mothers are single, criticizing some tribes in the desert for maltreatment of woman could make you appear as a hero of defending human rights but it would never help you to see your own mistakes.

Living in the west, I do not think that verbal harassment, or rape are very common.
Single parenting is certainly a big problem.

Also, unlike most in the west, I am not in favor of women working outside the home. It does give women more financial freedom, but it has a high cost: I know many women who would love to be stay at home mothers, but they can not, because they are more educated than thier husband, and end up being the primary providers.

I didn't say it's very common but it exist, the difference of level of education between wife and husband is a problem as you mentioned, it has an impact also on the way children see their father and mother.

I am in complete agreemnt with you. It's not any one nationality or religion that needs to be singled out for not giving equal rights to women. I think there are several places in the world where women are getting a raw deal, just in different ways and under different pretexts. Besides what may be a right in one part of the world may be perceived as a blatant violation of some code in another part of the world. So being judgemental about which part of the world is more in violation than the rest would become an endless debate. What may be useful is admitting that there exists a need to look into how women are being treated in your own domain. Charity they say begins at home. We as fathers, brothers, sons, and responsible males ought to introspect and see if we can start making the difference from where we are. However small the difference we make at least that'd be a start.

I should be honest it exist, but you know Chris the problem is that Western World has always claimed superiority and perfection in the issue of woman rights and human rights in general.

I agree with you there. I do not think western civilization has it perfect, and in fact I think we in the west are going more and more off track.

Boumaaraf, please delete the comment above. It is an example of what we, in the west call "spam." It is an insidious form of advertising. Chris, Id it is, and I are familiar with it.

Spam will someday unite the world. together, we will all rise up against it. I'm not sure what we will do afterward.

Hi! Concerning the women's rights; my aunt lives in Algeria for more than 20 yearsand has an Algerian husband. She is probably the most emancipated woman I have ever seen. I think that the problem doesn't lie with religion or culture but more with the individual people. There are rapists and usurpers in my country too and most of my fellow citizens happen to be atheists; it's just that there is always a percentage of population with maladaptive behavior.

Brother-

Im american woman, divorced from an Algerian man. We were educated differently and his idea of woman's right differed greatly from my own. He had 2 sisters, they did not go to school, and 5 brothers, all who went to school, then joined the military. In his eyes, women were to stay home and cook, clean, etc. NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS, BY THE WAY!!! But~~ I was raised with both parents working because they had mortgages and credit catds and bills and such. So i was taught from an early age that a wife HELPS her husband. When it came to finding a job, however, my education DID put me at an advantage over my husband, and i was promoted over him. This didnt last long; he quit and was more than happy to let me bring home the money. Again, i thought i was helping, so it was okay. Its a matter of each person's feelings; not a east VS west thing. If a wife can help her husband, why shouldn't she?
